The "Tips & Techniques" section offers helpful hints on the use and maintenance of your
Barber-Colman gear cutting and hob sharpening machines. We have a wealth of information available on
this kind of equipment and we think that this would be the ideal forum to share some of it with you.
We update these monthly, so be sure to bookmark this page and check back often.
In this month's tip we give you
some common formulas that are used for figuring setups of change gears on the machines.
Spur Gears
Pitch Diameter = Number of Gear Teeth/Normal Diametral Pitch
Outside Diameter = Pitch Diameter + 2 X Addendum
Base Diameter = Pitch Diameter X Cosine of the Pressure Angle
Diametral Pitch = Number of Gear Teeth/Pitch Diameter
Circular Pitch = Pitch Diameter X Pi/Number of Gear Teeth
Helical Gears
Pitch Diameter = Number of Gear Teeth/Normal Diametral Pitch X Cosine of the Helix Angle
Outside Diameter = Pitch Diameter + 2 X Addendum
Base Diameter = Pitch Diameter X Cosine of the Transverse Pressure Angle
Tangent of Transverse Pressure Angle = Tangent of Normal Pressure Angle/Cosine of the Helix Angle
Normal Diametral Pitch = Number of Gear Teeth/Pitch Diameter X Cosine of the Helix Angle
Normal Circular Pitch = PI/Normal Diametral Pitch
Transverse Circular Pitch = Normal Circular Pitch/Cosine of the Helix Angle
Axial Pitch = Lead/Gear Teeth
Axial Pitch = Normal Circular Pitch/Sine of Helix Angle
Module = 25.4/Normal Diametral Pitch
We hope these help. Next month
we will add to this list.
