This month I would like to discuss
Anti-Friction bearings. Specifically the tapered bearings used on the hob and work
spindles on the later Barber-Colman hobbing machines. Barber-Colman used Timken tapered roller
bearings on these spindles. I have found that many customers have replaced these bearings over the
years and did not have the proper information available to set the torque as required. Too much
torque and of course the bearings wear much too rapidly, and too little torque and there is
excessive looseness in the spindle under cutting pressures. The tables below show the proper torque
requirements for the most common machines.
Work Spindle Torque
|
6-10, 6-16, 6-20 machines |
10 to 15 in./lbs. |
|
16-16, 16-36, 16-56 machines |
60 to 80 in./lbs. |
|
14-15, 14-30, 22-15 machines |
80 to 90 in./lbs. |
Hob Spindle Torque
|
6-10, 6-16, 6-20 machines |
8 to 12 in./lbs. |
|
16-16, 16-36, 16-56 machines |
25 to 35 in./lbs. |
|
14-15, 14-30, 22-15 machines |
35 to 40 in./lbs. |
Hob Arbor End Support Torque
|
6-10, 6-16, 6-20 machines |
6 to 8 in./lbs. |
|
16-16, 16-36, 16-56 machines |
7 to 10 in./lbs. |
|
14-15, 14-30, 22-15 machines |
10 to 14 in./lbs. |
We hope this information is of use.
