"Tips & Techniques" - March, 2002

This month we will discuss "Qualifying Reference Surfaces of Hobs". Each hob, depending upon its diametrical pitch and class, has a certain standard for runout on three qualifying surfaces. These three surfaces give the operator of your hobbing machines a "truing surface" to verify that the hob is within the proper tolerance when setting up the machine. It also gives the operator of the Hob Sharpening Machine a reference surface to verify that the hob remains within its tolerance after it has been sharpened. Excessive runout in the hob on any of these surfaces can indicate other problems with the machine such as a bent hob arbor, bad spindle bearings, a worn end support, or even an out of level condition of the machine.

The accepted tolerances are as follows:

Diametrical
Pitch
1-1.999 2-2.999 3-3.999 4-4.999 5-5.999 6-8.999 9-12.999 13-19.999
