One of the prime requirements for figuring change gear setups on
Barber-Colman Hobbing machines is the proper machine constants. When Barber-Colman manufactured their machines, it was their
procedure to install plates on each change gearbox that gave the formula, constant, and change gears for the appropriate
requirements. However, it was impossible to cover all possible uses of the machine such as multiple thread hobs, helical gears,
worms, etc. Therefore it is necessary for the user to figure the proper change gears for these unusual instances. I find that many
times these plates have been painted over, lost, or otherwise made unreadable. Therefore below you will find the common constants
for Barber-Colman Hobbing machines.
