This month we will emphasize proper hob sharpening. We too often see hobs that are sharpened on tool & cutter grinders rather than proper Hob Sharpening Machines.
It is almost impossible to get proper spacing and control the rake on a cutter on a tool and cutter grinder and difficult to maintain the proper gash angle. Each hob
when properly sharpened will have the adjacent and non-adjacent spacing as well as the rake maintained to tolerances that the hob was originally manufactured to. Your
hob sharpening service, in house or jobbed out should have the capabilities of verifying these tolerances. If your hobs are properly sharpened you will be able to hob
your gears and splines easily to the proper tolerances.
