The tip this month concerns lubrication. Specifically the use of the proper lubrication in the Index Worm and Worm Gear mesh on Barber Colman Hobbing machines. We
have noticed that many of the machines we service do not have the proper oil in the Worm Gear boxes on Barber Colman Hobbing machines. We have seen anything from
Hydraulic fluid to bearing grease in the boxes and these do not lubricate the mesh properly. The use of the wrong lubrication can cause early and unusual wear on
the Index Worm and Gear which will directly affect the quality of the gears cut on the machine. Normally the first indication you see will be spacing error. The
proper lubrication for these machines is 600 weight Worm Gear Lube. It will be in your best interest to verify that your machines are properly lubricated.
